The Invention House team has researched the traditional spray, dipping, and manual conformal coating methods and has found a niche for a new type of automated conformal coating systems. The Raphael 4040 is a selective conformal coating robot that uses a 3D computer controlled, continuously supplied brush. Yes, a brush! The Raphael 4040 is a tabletop-sized robotic brush ideal for coating printed circuit boards (PCB) containing components that can’t be coated, including switches and connectors.

Our End-to-End Conforming Coating Process

Conformal coating paths are generated through a combination of two inputs: a joystick attached to the robot and Raphael Suite, our propriety software program. Using a combination of mouse, keyboard, and joystick moves, operators create optimimized coating paths that avoid keep-away areas. Single or multiple boards/panels can be held in the workspace. Conformal flow and brush speed can be controlled from point to point and from front to back to create an optimized and efficient conformal coating path for each PCB or panel.

  • Step 1: Importing Board Image & Creating Layout

    Path programming starts with importing a Gerber file or board image, then setting its X, Y, and Z dimensions. This process is completed for the board front and back. Multiple PCBs or panels can be laid out within the 15.5″ x 15.5″ workspace.

  • Step 2: Creating the Optimal Path

    Starting from a “home” point, the operator uses the joystick, keyboard, and click/drag actions to create a series of coating segments around the PCB’s X, Y, and Z axis. The initial path is created in dry-run mode and tweaked until the operator is satisfied with the program. An optimized path for a single board can then be copied to all boards in the layout.

  • Step 3: Coating Boards: Wet Run

    After completing a dry-run path, the operator selects a single board, activates the pumps, and selects the “Coat Single Board” option to begin the wet-run phase. During this period, they should pay close attention to coating flow and make any necessary adjustments to brush height, flow rate, and speed.

  • Step 4: Conformal Production Run

    Once the Raphael 4040 conformal robot is following the optimal path, production conformal coating can begin. Invention House recommends carefully analyzing early samples and making incremental path tweaks once production starts.
